DESCRIBE THE EVENT, TRY TO INCLUDE HOW IT RELATES TO YOUR MISSION OR VALUES
As a Latina/Chicana based sorority, Phi Lambda Rho holds culture to its highest standard in our objectives. We strive to provide an environment of inclusion within the UCSD community that will allow for Latinx students to feel a sense of belonging through the celebration of their roots.Noche de Cultura has been an annual event hosted by our organization to promote the Chicanx/Latinx culture through an evening of culturally based performances, art, and complimentary regional food. This event helps us achieve our goal by providing the UC San Diego Campus exposure to the different cultures of Latin America, thereby enhancing the campus climate and providing a welcoming space for students who otherwise might not feel culturally represented on campus. It's a night for students to embrace and be empowered by their roots. Noche de Cultura should continue to be an annual event because it will help with the retention of Latinx undergraduates at UCSD. The lack of representation of Latinx cultures on campus can contribute to feelings of isolation and marginalization for many Latinx students, with this event Phi Lambda Rho will help diminish those feelings for the Latinx community at UCSD. The program has helped bring our community closer through the enjoyment of an event which proudly represents various Latin American cultures, which are generally underrepresented within the UCSD population. This year I hope to expand our audience to a wider, more diverse range by inviting performers that embrace the afro-latinx in the Latinx community and as well indigenous performers in order to increase awareness of the intersectionality of Latinidad on campus, as well as help Non-latinx students experience diverse cultures that they often come across but have never indulged in.
