DESCRIBE THE EVENT, TRY TO INCLUDE HOW IT RELATES TO YOUR MISSION OR VALUES
Muir Musical is a UCSD student organization devoted to producing full-scale Broadway shows each spring. As the single musical theatre opportunity on the UCSD campus, Muir Musical aims to not only to produce high-quality shows for student entertainment, but also to create leadership and learning opportunities for both its members and audience. Students from all six UCSD colleges are invited to participate as cast members, as set or lighting designers, as finance or marketing directors, as stage managers or props masters, and so on. Furthermore, Muir Musical’s performances are completely student-directed and student-produced, providing a vital creative outlet for theatre and non-theatre majors alike. This year’s show, Spring Awakening, is a rock musical about a group of teenagers navigating the turbulent landscape of adolescent sexuality. It addresses complicated, relevant topics such as sex education, sexual consent and exploration, abuse, mental health, LGBT self-discovery, and women’s reproductive rights. Muir Musical is coordinating with CAPS, the LGBT Resource Center, and SARC to educate its members and audience by having the aforementioned groups hold booths at each performance. In doing so, Muir Musical aims to promote on-campus resources and raise awareness among the student body. Muir Musical is requesting AS funding to help us showcase Triton talent, put on a high-quality show that students can enjoy, and engage students in a thoughtful, earnest dialogue about serious topics that continue to impact our community today. As discussed with the AS Financial Controller, Muir Musical will submit two funding requests per each weekend of performances; this second funding request enables us to produce full-scale performances on April 13th, April 14th, and April 15th, the second weekend of performances for Muir Musical. There will be two performances instead of one on April 15th. The funds provided by AS will cover the costs of student tickets, and thus UCSD students will be able to receive free tickets through the UCSD Box Office. In this funding request, Muir Musical is requesting $5000 to cover the cost of 500 student tickets; each student ticket costs $10. As discussed with the VP of Finance, Muir Musical will use the leftover funds in its AS bank account to cover the rest of the costs of student tickets.
