IS THE EVENT ON CAMPUS?
DESCRIBE THE EVENT, TRY TO INCLUDE HOW IT RELATES TO YOUR MISSION OR VALUES
TED's mission is to bring to light ideas that people never thought about and spark conversations surrounding them that can change the way someone thinks or see the world. TEDx@UCSD tries to create the same experience for the population at UCSD on a more local scale. By sharing the experiences or knowledge of others, students are encouraged to think about their own beliefs and to share their own thoughts with others. TEDx@UCSD has always seen a great value in the power of looking at a dilemma and discussing it with others to try and come up with your own personal solution. In this event, TEDx@UCSD hopes to bring to students’ attention the idea of looking for another world - is it right to search for a solution elsewhere, or should people stay where they are and try to come up with a solution with the resources that they have? From day one of its existence, humanity was looking out into the night skies, wondering what was there. That was curiosity. It's the same question that modern people ask, hoping to find and explore a different world which is not as contaminated as our planet Earth, which may some day be polluted to a level where energy resources come to a zero and life will be impossible to sustain. Before exploring remote galaxies, however, shouldn't we we ask ourselves a question: “Maybe it makes more sense not to invest billions of dollars to space exploration, but rather use that money for fighting cancer, hunger, poverty, greenhouse gases, and global warming? Do big scale, and nearly impossible projects like space travel, produce results that are close to zero?" If we spent the resources we currently on planet Earth honestly and properly, would it be possible to turn our own planet into a paradise? Or are projects that spark our curiosity and sense of purpose, like space explorations, more vital to humanity as a whole? Would abandoning the mystery and pull of huge, albeit ones with guaranteed results, put to waste the curiosity that humanity has spent centuries developing? TEDx@UCSD does not hope to have students feeling as though they need to have the answer to this question. In fact, we would prefer if they didn't! Hopefully students are so compelled by the difficulties of what they have learned that they share the dilemma with friends, family and teachers. Thinking about and answering hard questions like these are difficult, but they lead to students that are more engaged with discussions and problems facing today's society. The structure of the event will be three speakers, one astrology professor, one philosophy professor, and one additional speaker, with time in between and after talks for students to ask questions and engage in conversations among themselves and the speakers.
